While the 2019 GMC Sierra AT4, as showcased in Autoweek's gallery, may not be a Trophy Truck, it represents a significant step forward for factory-built off-road capability in the full-size truck segment. For the desert racing community, especially those seeking a robust prerunner or a capable chase vehicle, the AT4 trim warrants a closer look.
Key to the AT4's off-road aspirations is its factory-installed 2-inch suspension lift, which accommodates 33-inch Goodyear Duratrac tires. This, combined with Rancho monotube shocks, offers a notable improvement in ground clearance and articulation over standard Sierra models. While not a long-travel setup, this configuration provides a solid foundation for light to moderate prerunning duties and navigating challenging access roads to remote race sections.
The AT4 also features a standard two-speed transfer case, a locking rear differential, and skid plates, all essential components for tackling varied desert terrain. The inclusion of Hill Descent Control and Traction Select System with off-road mode further enhances its utility when traversing steep grades or loose surfaces. These features, while common in the segment, are well-integrated and contribute to a more confident off-road experience.
From an Apex Racing perspective, the AT4 could serve as an excellent platform for further modification. The robust frame and powertrain options, including the 6.2L V8 and the new 3.0L Duramax diesel, provide ample power for carrying gear and navigating challenging environments. With aftermarket bypass shocks, stronger control arms, and perhaps a wider track, the AT4 could be transformed into a highly effective, comfortable prerunner for SCORE International or Best in the Desert events. Its blend of comfort and factory-backed off-road features makes it an interesting proposition for those who demand more than just pavement prowess from their truck.
